Robotic Knee Replacement: What to Expect and Recovery Timeline

By Dr. Niranjan Ghag · 6 min read

Robotic-assisted knee replacement combines surgical expertise with computer-guided precision, allowing implant alignment within fractions of a millimetre, smaller incisions and less soft-tissue damage.

How robotic surgery is different

A CT-based or imageless 3D plan of your knee is created before surgery. During the operation, the robotic arm keeps bone cuts exactly on plan, sparing healthy bone and ligaments. The result is a more natural-feeling knee and typically less post-operative pain.

Typical recovery timeline

  • Day 0–1: Walking with support, often within hours of surgery
  • Week 1–2: Staircase training, daily physiotherapy, most patients home by day 2–3
  • Week 3–6: Walking unaided indoors, returning to desk work
  • Month 3: Most daily activities pain-free; continued strengthening
  • Month 6–12: Full benefit realised, including travel and recreational activity

Who is a candidate?

Patients with advanced arthritis whose pain persists despite medication, physiotherapy and injections. Age alone is not a barrier — fitness for anaesthesia and motivation for rehabilitation matter more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is robotic knee replacement safer than conventional surgery?

The robot does not operate by itself — it ensures the surgical plan is executed precisely. Studies show more accurate alignment, less soft-tissue injury and quicker early recovery compared with conventional techniques.

How long does a robotic knee implant last?

Modern implants placed with accurate alignment are expected to last 20–25 years or more, which is why precision at the time of surgery matters so much.

When can I climb stairs after knee replacement?

Most patients climb stairs with support within the first week, and independently by 3–6 weeks, depending on muscle strength and physiotherapy compliance.
